Honeymoon Trail Winery's Pink Catawba takes Double Gold

            At the 2007 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition (FLIWC) this year there were over 2,100 entries from 371 wineries around the world in a competition that has been named among the 20 most influential wine competitions held across the country by American Gold Medal Wines. Among the winners this year was Honeymoon Trail Winery's Pink Catawba taking a prestigious Double Gold with three other of their wines also taking medals. More than 40 judges from around the world participated in the two-day competition, which took place in Rochester, New York.

"This will put us on the map along with the Niagara Wine Trail as a quality wine producing region," said award-winning wine maker and owner Garry Hoover, "Pink Catawba has already been one of our best sellers at the winery, so this will certainly help to promote our wine and region as producing world class wines." Garry's passion for wine making is certainly shown in this accomplishment. Pink Catawba is a delicate, semi-sweet wine made from the Catawba grape, one of the first Native American grapes used in wine making.

            As a Double Gold Medal Winner a case of Honeymoon Trail's Pink Catawba will be auctioned off at the 2007 Wine Auction and Dinner on May 5 th . All proceeds from the event will go to benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and families all over the world whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life threatening challenges. Honeymoon Trail Medals at the 2006 NY Wine & Food Classic

Honeymoon Trail Winery took home five medals at the 2006 New York Wine & Food Classic competition, held on August 15 & 16 at the Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua, NY, known as “The Oscars” of New York wine. The winery took home one gold medal for Diamond, two silver medals for Concord and Honeymoon Sweet, and a bronze for both their Pink Catawba and Razzleberry; which is a blend of strawberry and raspberry fruit wine.

This year’s competition included over 700 New York wines from Long Island, the Hudson Valley, the Finger Lakes, Niagara Escarpment, Lake Erie, and other regions of New York State. The awards were announced at a special “Governor’s Cup Celebration” luncheon at The New York Wine & Culinary Center. The awards were based on blind tastings by 24 expert judges, which included a majority from other states, with a large contingent from California. Judges included prominent wine writers, restaurateurs, retailers, and wine educators. Celebrating its 21st year, the Classic is open to all 239 New York wineries from all regions. In 2006, a total of 30 Double Gold, 53 Gold, 200 Silver, and 249 Bronze medals were awarded.

Honeymoon Trail Winery was established by Garry and Lori Hoover in 2005. Located in Cambria, New York, along the historic “Honeymoon Trail,” also known as Route 140, Honeymoon Trail Winery is a member of the Niagara Wine Trail and is minutes from Lake Ontario and Niagara Falls.

Honeymoon Trail Winery took home three medals in the fifteenth annual Indy International Wine Competition July 27 to 29, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Blue Ribbon Pavilion. This was the Honeymoon Trail’s first entry.

The largest wine competition in the US, the Indy International brought in over 3,800 wines from 17 countries. The Indy is also the second largest amateur competition in the country and holds the distinction of largest fruit wine competition.

Eighty-four judges from across North America reviewed approximately 120 wines a day based on appearance, aroma, taste, and aftertaste. Wines were awarded a concordance gold medal (for best of show), gold, silver, bronze, or no medal. Honeymoon Trail Winery took home a gold medal for their Pink Catawba and silver medals for their Honeymoon Sweet and Mighty Niagara wines.

Honeymoon Trail Winery and the Pampered Chef are teaming up to “Help Whip Cancer” for the month of May.

Make sure you mark your calendar for May 20th, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, when Honeymoon Trail Winery will host a Food and Wine Tasting featuring the Pampered Chef to benefit The American Cancer Society.

“We are excited to be part of this year’s “Help Whip Cancer” campaign,” says Lori Hoover, owner of Honeymoon Trail Winery. “Our customers have the opportunity to contribute by purchasing some specially designed products from Pampered Chef and Honeymoon Trail Winery.”

The American Cancer Society estimates about 41,000 women will die of breast cancer in 2006. However, the good news is that death rates from breast cancer declined by an average of 2.3 percent per year from 1990-2003. These decreases are due to early detection and better treatment options thanks to programs such as the “Help Whip Cancer” campaign.

Bring a friend or two and help to support a worthy cause by viewing Pampered Chef products, taste-testing Pampered Chef recipes, and tasting Honeymoon Trail wines. Purchase any of the “Help Whip Cancer” products and a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research and Education.

Honeymoon Trail Winery’s month long fundraiser will include a tasting fee of $2, which is normally free of charge. The tasting fee proceeds will benefit the Lockport Hospice Center, which will help to increase the awareness of the importance of early detection and raise funds for the fight against breast cancer in our area.
